Two Spanish soldiers serving in the multinational EU-run peacekeeping force in Bosnia, EUFOR, were wounded during an exercise near the northern town of Tuzla, officials said, adding their condition was stable and not life-threatening.

The soldiers were being treated in the Tuzla hospital.

“There was an incident at the Comanche base at Tuzla during a training exercise,” EUFOR spokesman Lieutenant Commander Pat O’Callaghan told Balkan Insight on Thursday.  “There is an internal investigation going on (about the accident).”

The incident took place during a regular exercise overnight.O’Callaghan said EUFOR “extends gratitude” to the hospital staff for their professional help. Hospital officials told media that one of the soldiers had suffered severe injuries to his abdomen and left arm, but was stable.

EUFOR, which now numbers around 2,100 troops from some 6,300 initially, replaced in late 2004 the NATO-led SFOR, that had deployed in the country in 1996 with over 30,000 soldiers.
The multinational  Implementation Force, IFOR, that handled peacekeeping in Bosnia immediately after the 1992-95 war had over 60,000 troops.
